Caravan holidays 'will be popular in 2012'

With Christmas just around the corner, many people in the UK are likely to be feeling the financial pinch and considering ways in which they might save the pennies any way they can.

In 2012, caravan holidays are likely to continue to rise in popularity as families embrace the staycation trend and opt for a domestic getaway that is fun, exciting and cost-effective.

      Caravan holidays offer cheap alternative

The gloomy economic outlook may mean households wish to safeguard their coffers rather than splash out on expensive trips abroad - suggesting that tourer holidays could be the perfect solution for many next year.

Indeed, Jon Dale, public relations manager at the Camping and Caravanning Club - which provides more than 4,000 campsites throughout the UK and across the world - noted his organisation's membership base has continued to expand over the last three years.

The industry figure explained there is no reason to suggest this acceleration might lose pace anytime soon, adding: "Caravanning is certainly a popular pastime and in this current economic climate we envisage it will only continue to rise in popularity in 2012."

      Tourer getaways cater for all

And it appears many different types of people may be tempted to give caravanning a go next year, as individuals seek to rediscover what Britain - and its majestic countryside - has to offer.

Polly Bishop, press officer for The Caravan Club, which is one of the largest touring organisations in Europe, observed tourer breaks can be ideal for the whole family, with each member likely to take something different away with them from the experience.

Ms Bishop commented: "Touring truly does offer something for everyone, providing the perfect getaway for families, couples, friends and independent travellers."

There are many activities on offer

Keeping everyone entertained on a caravan getaway should not prove too much of a problem, as parks nowadays tend to cater to all.

Indeed, those looking to relax and unwind are likely to find plenty of on-site facilities to make sure their stay is as comfortable as possible.

But for people keen to get out and about, the great outdoors offers an almost boundless playground where they can go walking, hiking, cycling and even try their hand at watersports such as canoeing and sailing.

Ms Bishop noted: "Tourers have a vast variety of activities at their fingertips, with the ability to go anywhere and do anything."

      Popular tourer destinations

There is certainly no shortage of choice when it comes to desirable destinations for caravanners in the UK at present - and Mr Dale has offered up a few suggestions as to where people may wish to head next season.

The industry expert noted the Lake District, the Peak District, the south-west of England and Derbyshire have all proven particularly popular in recent times, especially during the school holidays when parents treat their kids to an outdoors adventure.

And for those looking for something a bit further afield, Mr Dale explained: "Our Carefree travel service organises a number of inclusive holiday options and France is currently our most popular European destination for campers seeking warmer climates."ADNFCR-3576-ID-801245224-ADNFCR

A Scottish caravan site is set to undergo a revamp during the coming months to get it ready for the new season.

According to the Forfar Dispatch, The Caravan Club will continue its improvement programme at the Lochside Caravan Park throughout the winter as part of a £1.25 million investment made to enhance the holiday destination.

Under plans scheduled to be completed before the park re-opens in April next year, improvements are to be made to its service infrastructure, general facilities and pitching areas.

It is hoped this project will result in the whole site being upgraded following a period of gradual improvements over the course of 2010, therefore enabling it to attract greater numbers of holidaymakers in the new year.

Officials at Lochside are targeting an annual visitor total of 25,000.

This comes after the Shropshire Star reported that the Robin Newnes Touring Caravan Park has been granted permission to expand.

Caravanners urged to take care in winter

Britons considering the possibility of heading off for a festive break at a caravan park should take extra care on the roads.

That is if comments made by Peter Rodger, chief examiner at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), are anything to go by, as he believes making special provisions for journeys that are to be conducted in snowy, icy conditions is essential.

Many people like to get away from the hustle and bustle of Christmas by enjoying the calmness and serenity of a caravan site, but towing a portable home in winter can be treacherous.

With this in mind, Mr Rodger noted it is important for individuals to ensure all their windows are de-misted, as this will mean visibility is 100 per cent.

In addition, judging speed correctly is also important because losing control behind the wheel can be dangerous.

This comes after the Sandy Beach Caravan Park was hit with some unusual weather recently when an 80mph tornado ripped through the site.
