The Volkswagen Tiguan has been voted best overall Tow Car in the Simple Caravan Insurance Tow Car Awards 2015 which had more than 800 respondents, with the Mitsubishi Shogun and Skoda Superb taking second and third places.

The German–made SUV or sports utility vehicle beat 21 other cars altogether to be in the top percentile for towing power, stability, traction, comfort and economy.

SUVs or sports utility vehicles are defined as cars or vans equipped with four–wheel drive and on–road or off–road capability.

And though a review on the Top Gear website said owners were more likely to set foot on the moon than take it off–road, it is most likely that the majority of caravan owners opt for a holiday closer to home in the British Isles – or perhaps Europe if they're a bit more adventurous.

Indeed, rather than its off–planet capabilities what really concerns caravanners when deciding on which car to buy is its towing performance.

And individual comments from Simple survey respondents showed the Tiguan got the thumbs–up, with most describing its towing abilities as 'excellent' while one said, 'when you accelerate you have to look behind to make sure you haven't left the van behind.'

A review of the Tiguan last year by Practical Caravan stated: "The VW Tiguan feels at home when towing. It's stable, quick and composed with a caravan.

"At motorway speeds, the Tiguan gets on with the job quietly and efficiently. It is untroubled by crosswinds and holds a straight and steady course, rarely needing much input from the driver.

"In an emergency lane–change, the VW Tiguan takes firm charge of the caravan. There is some lean when changing direction as you might expect from a 4x4 but, even when swerving violently, the car's movements are controlled."

Other winners in their class were Mitsubishi Shogun with Best Towing Power and Best Comfort, Skoda Superb with Best Economy and Land Rover Discovery with Best Traction and Best Stability.

One respondent said the of Shogun: "When towing it has no trouble at all – if you get stuck you know it will be able to get out and you feel safe at all times."

While others said of the Discovery: "You do not even know you are towing a caravan – excellent", and, "an excellent all round towing vehicle that is not phased by anything."

Here's a breakdown of how the top 10 performed.
